PORT CHALMERS.

The Port Chalmers Borough Council held its meeting yesterday evening, the members present being the Mayor (Mr .T. Mill), with Crs J. Cameron, W. M. Innes. 0. Inverarity, W. Murray, W. Pedlow; D. Leach, J. Watson pun., S.H. -Wilson, J. Watson sen., and J. Tail. Apologies were received from Crs Weir and Edgar. Mr T. E.'Davidson, Wellbrook, MiMwaka, wrote giving the council notice to erect a fence section 90, block VII, North Harbour and Blueskin district, and sections 1 and 2, block VI, same district. —Referred to the Reserves Committee to report.

Mr John D. Ritchie, Secretary' Department of' Agriculture, wrote re " The "Dairy Industry Act, 1593," and the contemplated bringing section 5 of the act into operation so far as inspection of .dairies and cows from

which the public milk supply is drawn is concerned.—The letter' was referred to the Abattoir Committee to'report Mr A. Thomson, Secretary District high School, wrote asking the council to remit the usual charge of 5s for the privilege of holding a concert m the Garrison, Hall on the motion of Cr Inverarity, seconded by Cr Pedlow.

Mrs Annie Cunningname wrote thanking the mayor and councillors for the Very kind resolution of sympathy passed by them at their last meeting Mrs R. S. Reynolds wrote thanking the mayor and councillors for their great, appreciation of the services rendered by her late husband.—The letters were received.

The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £116 4s lOd be passed for payment, and stated that coupons of tlie value of £353 10s towards the half-yearly-interest on the water works loan had been paid by the bank since the last meeting. Tho receipts for the fortnight had been:' —General account, • £46 9s 9d;: water account, £66 17s 4d;—total, £113 7s id.—Adopted. The Reserves Committee reported that the lease of the late Mr Arthur Rollin's section No. 32, block IV, North Harbour and Blueskin district, would expire on June 13. They recommended the same to be submitted to cither public tender or auction, the necessary steps for valuing tho land and improvements to be taken. —Adopted. The committee to have power lo submit same to public tender or by auction.

The Works Committee reported on tho work on which the staff had been ■ engaged since March 17. In reference to the Waikcnaiti County Council's application for permission to make a road to Mr M'Lean's property in Mansfordtown,: the committee subnutted a copy of their letter to the 'Waikouaili Council granting that body permission at a peppercorn rent of one shilling per annum to make and maintain such rop.d, and grunting them a concession to remove portions of the New Cemetery fence for a distance of five chains (more or less) to pegs to be agreed upon by the Borough Council inspector and Mr Randall, inspector for the County Council, in order to allow a road to be made to Mr M'Lean's property, tlie Port Chalmers Ijorough Council reserving the right to again take possession of that portion of the Town Belt if they required it. I'he committee, also urged that an agreement based upon the above conditions should be drawn up at the oxpence of the Waikouaiti County Council.— Adopted.

The Lighting Committee reported that the street lamps had been lit from the Bth inst., being six weeks earlier than last year.

It was resolved that1 the clerk write to the contractor for tho repairs of the Presbyterian Church that the council would hold him responsible for any damage done to the clock.

It was resolved that the Lighting Committee be requested to report as to the advisability of extra lamps through the town.

Tho AVorks Committee's attention was drawn to the state of the footpath iri Beach street from the Shaw* Savill, and Albion Company's shed.

The Abattoir Committee reported that they were unanimous as to the desirability of erecting the abattoirs at the quarry site, and recommended that an architect lie appointed for the purposo of drawing up plans and specifications, also the estimated cost of the proposed work, the amount required to be borrowed being in their opinion £1200. The committee recommended that a plebiscite of tho ratepayers bo taken for the purpose of raising a loan of £1200 for a currency of 30 years, the rate of interest to be 4- per cent, per annum. The committee further recommended that the necensary steps be taken as to advertising and calling a public, meeting of the ratepayers in terms of "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886," and "The Abattoirs Act, 1894-." It was resolved that tho report be taken clause by clause.—Or Murray strongly opposed tho erection of tho abattoirs, especially on tho quarry site, as it was not half a mile from town. Councillors had not been informed of the probable income and expenditure.—The Mayor said the orection of abattoirs was a matter that must come—if not this year, it would be next, as ho had no doubt the erection of abattoirs

would be compulsory.—Crs Wilson and Inver-' arity spoke against the erection.—Crs Loach, i Innes, and Watson, jun., spoke in favour of I erecting abattoirs on the quarry site, and said they believed the abattoirs would be selfsupporting.—The Clerk read an estimate of the probable income and expenditure, and after several other councillors had given their views, .1 vote .was taken, and the first clause i was carried *0y 6 to s.—The second and third clauses ware carried by 10 to 1.
