CHATTO CREEK DREDGING COMPANY.
to' the editor. Sir,— In your last Saturday's issue is a report; of an extraordinary general meeting of the above-named company, in which the chairman is reported to have informed the meeting that " they had provided, however, for a depth of 25ffc." I would point out that in 1863 I formed a company knowa as the Nil Desperandum to work the bed of the Manuherikia Riper, which would be about the centre of the above-named company's claim. I succeeded in turning the river out of its natural course, and started to sink a paddock aboutj, the centre of the claim. I had 54- men and three f!alit'omia.n pumps at work, and succeeded ia (jetfcing down 18ft, but could get no further for water. I then put down an iron rod, but could not reach bottom, so gave it up as a bad job. I visited this ground within the last 12 mouths, aud I consider that there is fully from 12ft to 15ft of tailing on this ground more than there was ia 1863. I arrived at this by oM land marks—viz., the north bank of flood race (a portion of which is now visible) and the course of the old Rose, Thistle, and Shamrock water race, which I constructed in 1864. This race took its ii«« about 300 yards below the north boundary of the Chatto Creek claim. This is written for the benefit^ of the shireholdera, considering that they should provide for a Urgsr depth than 23ft to work the river bed in the part of the claim indicated.—l am, &c., John Oole Ohapple. Allandale, Ophir, February 23.
