THE MACANDREW MONUMENT—A SUGGESTION.

- ' TO THIS EDITOS.

:Sir,—ln. passing Macandrew'd monument to- ; day aud lookiag attentively on it, I could not I help thinking how unworthy it was of the man | whom it is intended to represent, and .what.'a ; fitting opportunity would now present" itself of doing something to raise him a niche higher from the eartb. To prove the insignificance of the structure I was more than surprised the other day, ou conversing with a Dunedin gentleman, to learn that he, though an old colonist with a well-established business in Princes street, didnot know of its existence. "Why," he said, " is there a Macandrew monument?" , I was dumbfounded at this exclamation. When I told him where it was he said that he did not remember ever having seen it. ' . When we come to think of the self-sacrificing devotlou of James Macandrew id advancing the iuterests of Otago from the tima he first set foot in New Zealand up to the very day" of his untimelydeath.it behoves us, at. least, if we have a monument to his memory, to do some* thing to make it more conspicuous. .. ■ . ■ Amidst the many schemes that are being formed to do justice to the celebration of the Jubilee of the province which Jiei so much assisted to improve, I think that a fund might be started for the purpage of purchasing a marble column, say, 6ft or BFt in length, to be erected on the present bluestone basis—fixing the bust securely on top. The cost would not ba great, and I feel assured that our old colonists would subscribe liberally. ' I herewith enclose 10s to commence a fund for this object, and beg to ask if you.will kindly receive any further donations that may be sent you for that purpose.—l am, &c : , VPilliam Fabnie. ■ [We shall be pleased to take charge of any sums forwarded, but would suggest that intending subscribers should meet and appoint a committee to take the matter in hand Ed 0. D. T.] . '
