BURNS AND CHURCH SOCIALS.
TO THE EDITOE. :
Sir, —"'King p? Diamonds," in your correspondence columns this morniug, has given your readers something to liugh over, and ;" Lover oJ BurosV facetious thrusts about the Anglican religions, cird-playing, and dancing parties have hardly got home ye&. . Max O'Rsll teils us that the only good joke ever perpetrated by an Englishman was when Sydney Smith said it required a surgical operation to enable a Scotchman to see a joke. He adds, that Eugiishmen are so proud of i having ona good joke really their own that they iterate and reiterate it on every possible occasion. A Scot when twitted with Sydney Smith's saying retorted, " Weel, the surgical instrument wad need a better point than an English joke." Your Milton'correspoadent evidently requires a surgical operation of the kind suggested when he takes "Lover of Burns's"letter seriously. He needs time to grasp Scotch humour ; but read it again friend*—you'll get there in time.— I am, &c., - February 21. Emu.
