AN INTERESTING RETURN
In July last Mr Lawry asked for a return showing the number of convictions for drunkenness" of persons born in New Zealand bnt of European descent, with tbe total number of convictions for the same offence during each year, 1887 to 1894-. The number of New Zealand-born persons in gaol on the 30th June lsst w»s 135 out of a total of 565 prisoners, or 24'00 per cent. At the census of 1891, out of the total population of the colony ever 15 jears of age, 33'89 per cent, were New Zealand-born.
