SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The ordinary meeting of the Port Chalmers District High School Committee, held on Tuesday evening, was attended by Messrs E. G. Allen (chairman), Bauchop, Sampson, Sharp, Kettle, and Morgan. An application for a half-holiday for the swimming tournament was granted. A letter was received from the Education Board requesting a conference with the Selection Committee of the board. After careful consideration it was decided that no possible benefit could result thereby, and the secretary was instructed to decline tho proposal. The rector's report, which wss adopted, intimated that the attendance was well maintained; that Mr T. Hunter had obtained the first sectiou of his B.A. degree, and that the following pupils had passed the junior civil service examination :—B. Downes, J. Mawson, A. M'Kty, J. R. M oo re, W. M'Donald, and A. E. Watson. The committee's report recommending the combined use of gas in the school at a reduced rate for the coming winter was adopted. The statement of accounts re picnic was submitted ahd approved of. Messrs Sharp and Sampson were appointed a Visiting Committee for ths ensuing month.
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Kensington School was held on Tuesday evening, and was attended by Messrs G. Clark (chairman), M'Gill, Thompson', Shacklock, and R. and J. Wbyte. Mr Moore, as convener of the Bazaar Committee, handed over a fine new English piano to the school as the result of the recent bazaar. He also called attention to the proposed sale of work at Easter for the purpose of raising funds for ce.-taiu improvements to tha school grounds, &_., and mentioned that the ladies and others were working vigorously in preparing work to supplement the excellent stock in hand, which should command a ready sale. Warm approval was expressed of the voluntary labour undertaken by the workers. It was decided to have a joint meeting early next week, when measures can be shaped iv the direction of providing a real good entertainment in connection with the Easter sale. The head master reported an improvement in the attendance, aud referred to the great falling off on Cup day and on two wet days. Over 108 pupils absented themselves in the forenoon of the first day aud 138 in the afternoon, while notes were received desiring the teachers to allow 79 more pupils away at 2 o'clock, thus leaving in school less than half the number on the roll. '
At the monthly meeting of the Ravensbourne and Rothesay School Committee, held on Monday evening, the head master (Mr J. Reid) reported for the month :—Number of scholars on the roll: Boys 117, girls ICB ;—total, 225. Average attendance : Boys 108, girls 92 ;— total, 200. A vote of thanks was passed to the following for their kind donations to the school picnic .—Messrs Yonng and Anderson, J. Peterson and Co., W. Bireky and Co.. and T. Tait. The report of the pesny savings bank showed: Deposits £.9 15s. withdrawals £H 0s lOd ;— total funds, £178 17s 9d; depositors, 208.
