NORTH END ROWING CLUB SWIMMING
RACE.
The Handicap 100 yds Swimming Race in connection with the North Bod Rowing Club c«,me off in the vicinity of the boatbouse on tWednesday evening. Despite the rather rough night a large crowd turned up to witnes9_tbe event. About 30 started, and Rice, Given, Lambeth, and Tresuder won their respective heats. The iina', however, was won by Eic3 (scratch), wita Given (6sec) second, and Lambsth (llsec) third. Time, lmin 21»eo. The race was for a trophy presented by Mr Mark Higgins. As there was onJy a few feet between the first four men the result reflect* credit on Mr A. Burk's judgment in handicapping. Mr G. Flewry, who kindly acted as starter, gave entire satisfaction.
A Wellington telegram Btates that the following horses have arrived from Lytteltou to fulfil engagements at the Hutt Bext week: — Saracen, Lady Zetland, Bessie Macarthy, Skirmisher, Marino, and Silver Spec Toare is little or no betting over the Cap, 5 to 1 being the best offer on the field, with Stepfeldfc and Lady Zetland most inquired affer. A Palmerston North telegram', states that the oecretary of the Talmeaiton North Cjoling Club has recaived a letter from Mr C. R. Wilson* nuuager, asking if arrangements csv be carried ©ut for a meeting in February at which Harris, Martin, Pither, and Parions will campate, and offering a decent cheque and a good programme for the local riders, and the club will furnish lap scorers, timekeepers, Ice. A Chriatchnrch telegram stites that at Lancaster Park yesterday afternoon, J. Boyd, a member of the Christchiu-ch Cycling Club, lowered rhs New Zealand one-aiile bicycle record to 2min 20sec, which is 93c0 better than previous record held by T. Clarkson. Boyd was paced by a tandem. This is the firat time a tandem has been used tor puce-making in the colony. A Melbourne cable says that the steeplechaser Daimio will be shipped to England in April. ' . ' i.- ' The Gore Standard states that *t * meeting of the stewards of the Gore Racing Clnb it was resolved that Mr M'Kenzis's protest against Gaiety be not upheld, and that the Mile Trot be awarded to Gaiety, and Mr M'KeDzie's deposit ba forfeited. Taggart, the rider of J.H., was fined £5 for disobedience at tbfi post. The secretary was instructed to writs to Mr M'Kenzie requiting;an apology for abusive language, used to Mr Gibb. Emtaerpon, the rider of Loby in the Gore Racing Club Handicap, was called before the stewards for an expUnation as to his riding. His explanation not being satisfactory, it was resolved that the matter be held over for' a week, 'pending further investigation.
