Smokais again incrfiasin^ at the Brckea Hill mice. Pom ping gas has been discontinued.' ; Owing to insufficient, heat in the f bra aces, it was found that' bcly 8 per cent, of gas was being forced, the res!; being; smoke and air, of which there was already sufficient below ground. Ga^ will now bs manufactured at another smelter's, Where greater power is available. The directors are inundated with oilers to extinguish the fire for a ; consideration. Many of the applicants evidently have uoS the remotest idea of the nature of the worlnags, and the directors do not treat the offers seriously. -Many old miners think that, despite all expedients, the fire will not ba Completely subdaed for many weeks to come.
There is little change in the' fire at Broken Hill. Extensive blastings are being continued, but as one rent is closed a fire breaks out_ in others. A fire engine ' has been .lowered down the cliff, and carbonic acid gas will be tried again to-morrow on an extensive scale. The opinion is gaining grcnind that the present tactics will have to bs abandoned. Thosa who have had similar experiences ara nrging the construction of a wall at each ride to shut the fire'in, and then the opening of all rents so ss to encourage it to burn itself out.
