A QUESTION FOR THE FLAG COMMITTEE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sra, —la the football column of to-day's issue I no'.ioe the following statement: "Pirates Second v. High School — Th_. Pirates Second won this match by default." And again, lower down, I read : " The Pirates S*coad journeyed to Waikouaifci on Saturday and flayed a most enjoyable game with tho local club." Are not theso statements self-contradictory ? If bho Pirates were at Waikouaifci, how is it possible that they claim by default a match that was to have been played on the Asylnm ground ? To win a match by default it is necessary that the team claiming the win should b& en the ground arranged, and that their opponents ohould not turn up. If neither side turn up, who are the defaulters ? The High School have qnito as strong a claim for a win as the Pirates, and I hope the Flag Committee will not do other junior teams the injustice of allowing the Pirates to claim a win by default when, as yoar report shows, they themselves did not put in an awpea^anoe to fulfil their engagement with the High School. —I am, &c.,

Dnntdin, July 22,

Burs and White,

[Tho explanation furnished to us is this: that the High School having intimated to tha Pirates Ciab that they would, owing to tba school vacation, forfeit to them in the Junior Flag match on Saf.nrday, the latter club asked and received the permission of tho Flag CommiSfcee to visit Waikouoiti, the committee being influenced in giving their consent by ths knowlodge that the country teema which dfcl not enter for the Flng competitious have .had little or no opportunity this season of meeting town fifteens.—Ed.
