THE PAINTING OF THE GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL.

TO THE EDITOR,

Sir,—Referring to the contract for painting ths Oirlft'- High School, Mr H. 8. Fish isreportsd as havicg stated t-hafc tbere are only four recognised master paintera in Dunadin. To this I would take strong objection, and, in doing so, might mention the following firms who were not asSed to tender for the work, viz. :— Omarid and Drew, George street; E. Waghorn, Octagon ;T. Wright, George street; T. G. Wright, North-East Valley ; and Craigie, South Dunedin. I presume that Mr Fish does not consider these firms qualified to carry out a coatraot as master painters. Will Mr Fish inform me why i!i comes about that &n outride workman, JUr Rosenbrock, is requested to tender, and after doing so sscures the job, and ia addition is employed to do the extras at a cost of £63, which is considerably mote than the contract itself, and this without giving others an opportunity of tendering. This same Mr Rosenbrock wan recently put on as a relief painter at the Town Hall ia'connection with the relief granted by the City Council, and is now using the plant of H. S. Fish and Son, and men are beisg transferred from the Criterion Hotel contract (which ia being done by H. S. Fish and Son) to the High School job. ,

This job is on a. level with the painting of the gas retorts and the custom housa some time ago, wbea this master painter (so-called) was the successful tenderer!

That Messrs Fraser, Sinclair, and others shonld be bamboozled in this matter i 3 much to bs wondered at. Thanking you for your space,—l am, &c, •

Dunedin, July 22,

S. Thos. Boiton, ' Master Painter.
