ENTERTAINMENTS.
A matinee will be given this afternoon in the City Hall by the Royal -Marionettes for the benefit of schools and children. Mr Marsden will also give a limelight exhibition of beautiful views.
Another popular concert will be given in tlie Cir.y Hall this evening under the management of Messrs Collins, Browne, and Stapleton, who will be assisted by Miss 'May Malvino and others.
The annual sscial in connection with the Dunedin Builders' Association, which was-held last night ju the Choral Hall, was more successful, if possible, 4;kan those of preceding year's. The floor was in excellent condition for dancing, which formed the chief feature of the evening's 'amusement, aad some 80 couples engaged in this form of enjoyment to music supplied by Mr Yates's band; while the more staid occupied themselves with a quiet game q? cards in one of the side rooms. During the evening, at intervals in the dancing, songs wore Riven by Mr Wells, Miss Meikle, Miss Thomson, and others, aad also by Mr E. C. Torrance, who superintended the arrangements generally. The catering was entrusted to Mr Lean, and was. all that could be desired. Messrs R. Bandilands, 1?. Barton, '. J. Barton, and G. T. Anderson acted efficiently as M.Cs. An enjoyable and largejy-attended entertainment was given in St. Peter's Schoolroom on Wednesday evening by the St. Peter's Literary and Social Olab. Songs were rendered by Ilessrs Brebner, Irvipe, Eagar, Sharp, Misses Bowling and Pcake. Mr Marryatt gave a pianoforte solo, while an orchestra contributed » composition by Mr A. A. Marsden, called " The Glasgow wallz." In the second part B comedietta, entitled "Withered Leave?," was gone through, those taking part being Messrs A. A. MaredeD, IV. H: Irvine, B. Crawford, C. Marsden, Misses Rodg'qra and-Sims. At the conclusion a dance was held, and kept up till an early hour in the morning. A very enjoyable social wag-held in the Bible Christian Mission Hall, Stafford street, on Thursday, wheia there was a very large attendance. The object of the social was to do honour to Mr and Mrs' Pope. Rev. W. Beady presided, arid in the ponrsa of hi» remarks said they hod been' meeting in that hair for tnree years,' and' duricg that time it had been well looked after by their worthy friend Mr Pope, who had spared no time or care in studying the comfort of the congregation.' He had never met with a more unselfish man than Mr Pope^, who bad bestowed his labour and time, not looking for" any remuneration nor even thanks. The members of the -congregation thought it' was '' a fitting opportunity to present Mr and Mrs Pope with a small token of their * appreciation and esteem, and therefore he had tlie pleasant duty of presenting Mr Pope with a walking stick, and Mrs Pope with & reading lamp. The stick was suitably engraved—viz., "Presented, to Mr Pope by' the B.C. Church. Donedin, 1895." Mr N. Reed spoke a few _ words of commendation of Mr Pope's services.1 Dlr Pope, who was completely taken by surprise, responded in a very effective manner for Mts Pope and himself. During the evening •• The King's Harvest Court" was given by 32 performers by special request, and ■was highly appreciated. Tea and cake were banded around, and a vote of thanks and games brought an enjoyable evening to a close.
