INSPECTION OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.
(Feom Ova Own Cobbespondent.)
Auckland, January 23.
The Stur in alluding to the application of the Catholic bishops for the inspection of their schools by the Board of Education refers to tha recent decision of the Ota go Board, and says:—" We believe the Otago Board has mada a, mistake. It should accept no responsibility in a business over which it possesses not the Blighte»t control. This principle stand)) good for the State as well as for local boards. The expenditure of public money should be absolutely under public control. By ordering its inspectors to txamine the Roman Catholic schools, the board is placing them hi a moat invidious and undesirable position. We do not see how it can rufuse similar applications from other private schools, aud where is it to end f Such schools have another and less objectionable way of obtaining the State hall-mark of efficiency. They can compel all teachers in their employment to pass the publio examinations prescribed for teachers of public schools. If a guarantee of effioisney only ia sought, we somniend this coureu to their consideration."
