OCCUPANCY OF TEACHERS' HOUSES.

(F/bom Odb Own Correspondent.)

Auckland, January 23.

€ome rather extraordinary developments in Connection with teachers' houses erected by our educational authorities were brought to light ill! the meeting of the Board of Education. In some cases teachers do not occupy the bousos, but prefer to let the buildings to others. lv one case a teacher's house was used as a sort of sanatorium by a commitieeman, whose own bouse was in a vallsy, and as he suffered from theum&tism he migrated at certain seasons ol the year to the more healthy quarters provided at the expense of the board. In another case a house was occupied by a man with a large family, who, it was mentioned, was not likely to leave it in the best condition for the man who was destined to follow him. The question Tras raised as tb who received the rent in euch casss, but none of the members of the board appeared, to know. One member said that in rpany cases when applications for teachers' bouses came in he had a grave suspicion that some, resident in the neighbourhood or a member of the school committee wanted to live in it. This is cartaiuly an imnatiufnctorj state of things, and tome definite understanding should be Rrrived at as to whether teachers should be required to occupy houses when provided, or, if not, xrht-t should be done with all these buildings.
