Auckland, March 23,

At the New Zealand Women's Christian Temperance, Union Convention the report of the national corresponding secretary, Miss Fulton, showed that the volume of business of the Union for the year had amounted to L 667. Greetings were received from the Executive Council of the Auckland Band of Hope Union. A vote of thanks was given to Sir John Hall for his efforts on behalf of women's suffrage. It was decided to send the union banner to the Chicago Exhibition. The rifle champion, Sergeant Doughty, arrived to-day in Auckland, via the West Coast, and was received at the Auckland railway station by the members of his own company (the A Battery) and a large number of other volunteers, as well as great crowds of people. The mayor, Mr Crowther, delivered an address congratulating Doughty on his ■rictory. Cheers if ere given for the champion, who was carried shoulder high to a gun carriage and escorted to the drillshed, where he was again repeatedly cheered. A man named M'Donald, who was arrested to-day for drunkenness, attempted to hang himself in the police cell with a strip of blanket, but was prevented from doing so.

Wellington, March 23. The Government analyst reports on the various specimens forwarded by Captain Jackson Barry, who states that the locality where they were obtained was Kawhia, King Country: (1) Stibnite sulphide of antimony: Contains 6942 per cent, of antimony ; no gold or silver found. (2) Galena: This averaged 8120 per cent, of lead, and 50oz 12dwt 6gr of silver per ton, with minute traces of gold, which most galenas contain. Both these (1 and 2) are valuable ores. (3) Quartz, &c.: Too small for thorough test; no gold or silver found. (4) Hematite : Containing 6124 per cent, of iron. (5) Granular and vesicular rock : No gold or silver found.
