The borough auditor reported to tho council last night that the amount of defalcations traceable amounted to £277 7s lid. There was a further sum of £83 6j 9d marked off in the ratebook, but no payments for these latter items could be found in the cashbook. P. H. Bourke, brother of the late secretary, wrote to the council stating that on inquiry at the borough office he found the actual deficiency was £277 7a lid, against which there was a security held by means of a bond of £250, and he enclosed a cheque for £277 7s lid ia pajment of tha deficiency, and in cancellation of tho bond. The oouncil agreed to accept the cheque and cancel the bond. The original bond hsd been two sureties of £250 each, bat one bondsman is since dead. Wellington, June 10. The committee of tho Canterbury Employers' Association have considered the labour bills to be introduced into Parliament, and decided that certain provisions would prove vexatious and harassing, and would restrict manufactures and trades so seriously as to contract the operations of employers and reduce the amount of work available. They have not made public what the clauses are which they object to. Tae Board of Education to-day adopted a report on the School Committees ElectioDS Act. It suggests that "householder" should meaa and include every adult male or female person who (being the owner, lessee, or tenant) resides in any dwelling house within tho school district, and parent or guardian or other person resident in the district who bas actual custody of aDy child attending any Stats school situated within such district. The abolition of the cumulative vote is stated to be an almost unmixed benefit. The report suggests that the election of school committees should be conducted on a i similar plan as the election of road boards. The | schoolmaster should not attest voting papers. A defect in the act h a want of meausof certifying that the candidate or the person nominating him is a householder of the district. It 13 suggested that the committee should consist of not less than five or more than nine, a majority to retire alternately at the end of each year.
