The New Zealand HeraH, commenting on the appointment of Mr Warrick, Weston to the general managership of the New Zealand Insurance Company, says:—"We congratulate Mr Weston on his appointment and also the shareholders on having obtained the services of so able an underwriter, and a gentleman so thoroughly oapable of filling the important position." Major Goring, the officer in charge of the? Auckland Permanent Artillery, has applied to the Harbour Board for permission to uee the reclaimed land near tbo Calliope Dock in order to mount a battery of six smooth-bore guns for use as a saluting battery, the present position of the saluting battery on Mount Victoria being unsuitable, in his cpinion. He instances tbe fact that the officers of the French warship Champlain, when entering the harbour recently from Tahiti and saluting the British fl'.g, were not awara of the fact that their compliment was at once returned by the Permanent Artillery from Mount Victoria until Captain Greenfell, of H.MS. Cordelia, sent an officer to acquaint them of the fact. This was owing to a westerly breeze blowing.
