OTAGO UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
A deputation, consisting of Messrs. W. D. Milne, W. A. Stout, and 0. R. Barclay, waited upon the, city members of Parliament, in the Town Hall, yesterday afternoon, with respect to a proposed bill for altering the constitution of the Council of the Otago University.
Mr W. D. Milne explained that the purpose of the proposed bill was to give power to the graduates of the Otago University to appoint members to the council of the university, co as briDg that body more into touch with the movements of the day. Under the old constitution provided by the Provincial Council ordinance the graduates, after there were 30 of them, were to elect the members of the council, but as the ordinance was superseded by the New Zealand University Act this power was lost, and the council beoame a nominee body appointed by the Governor.. The graduates now desired to have a voice in the appointment of members of the council in accordance with the original intention of the founders of the University of Otago. In Canterbury the graduates appointed all the members of a body called a board of governor?, which had control of the Lincoln College, the Canterbury College, the museum, the public library, and the High School. They did not ask for such powers here, but had prepared a bill which Mr Hutchinson had interested himself in, and bad kindly undertaken to introduce. This bill was different from the one introduced by Dr Fitchett, for, seeing that the Government provided a considerable amount of money, they had deemed it right the Government should have a say in the appointment of members of the council. What they asked for ou behalf of the graduates was the right to appoint to alternate vacancies, and that all new appointments should be foi' a term of five years, but that the present members of the council should not be affected by the bill.
Mr Fish said that the proposal Beemed moderate and reasonable, that the bill would be in good hands if entrusted to Mr Hutchison, and that he (Mr Fish) would be willing to support it./ ■ .■ .. ' : : ■■ . "
Mr PiNKEETON also expressed himself a 9 being in favour of the proposed bill, and willing to give it his support.
