THE KAIWAKRA MURDER.

(Peb United Press Association.) " Wellixgton, July 24. Mr H. D. Bell, Crown prosecutor, who conducted the case against Chemis, has commenced an action for libel against E. G. Jellicoe, solicitor, claiming £5000 damages for alleged libel contained in certain paragraphs in the shorthand notes taken by the Government shorthand reporter at an interview between Mr Jellicoe and the prisoner and published. When Chemis was informed that the Government had declined to allow Mr Jellicoe to interview him again, he asked for writing materials, which were at once supplied to him, and ho then wrote a statement to the Government, purporting to ba a truthful account of his movements on the night of the 31st May. Ho asserts his innocence, and protests against being hanged for a crime of which he ssys he is innocent. The statement, which was written in Italian, goes before the Governor in due coarse.

. Mr Jellicoe waited on the Governor personally and laid the papers in counection with the Chemis case before him.
