Auckland, July 24. The mayor has received no reply from the Government re the proposal to utilise the nnemployed on the goldfields. Further investigation show that the labour market is not so congested as was supposed. The men on stonebreaking for tho City Council at Mount Eden have dwindled dowu by 25 per cent,, doing better elsewhere, and few applications coming in. The relieving officer states that he haa do difficulty in finding employment for able-bodied men, steady and industrious, in the country. The American Insurance Commissioners, Messrn Stillmnu and Bromwell, met the board of directors of ths New Zealand Insurance Compmy to-day. The result of the conference has not transpired, but it is believed no modus vivendi has been established.

Passgngers by the Wainui from Samoa state that is rumoured that Colonel Coetlogan, British consul, is about to ba removed. Although acquitted by the High Commissioner of the charges preferred by the Germans of signalliog to Mataafa's forces on tbe night of their disastrous expedition, there being no truth in them, the Germans are greatly irritated. It is presumed the step, if taken, is in pursuance oi the policy of the British Government 1o keep sweet with Germany. English residents of Samoa Rpprove of Colonel Coetlogan's conduct during the recent crisis.
