Auckland, July 24. The mayor has received no reply from the Government re the proposal to utilise the nnemployed on the goldfields. Further investigation show that the labour market is not so congested as was supposed. The men on stonebreaking for tho City Council at Mount Eden have dwindled dowu by 25 per cent,, doing better elsewhere, and few applications coming in. The relieving officer states that he haa do difficulty in finding employment for able-bodied men, steady and industrious, in the country. The American Insurance Commissioners, Messrn Stillmnu and Bromwell, met the board of directors of ths New Zealand Insurance Compmy to-day. The result of the conference has not transpired, but it is believed no modus vivendi has been established.
