9 TUAPEKA COUNTY JOCKEY CLUB HACES. j (Fhom Ocr Own CoiiiinsposDKNf.) j LaKrkxck, January 21. The weather for the races to-day was really fine, although in the morning grave doubts were entertained as to whether it would hold up or not. The attendance of the public was strain j large, there being fully 1500 people on the ground. Iho various events were well contested resulting in close and exciting finishes. For the Hurdle Race ouly two horses Faced the starter namely Dutiluce and Hector; Trapper and Garibaldi being reserved for the big handicap. Dunlucd had very little difficulty in disposing of Hector, who was outpaced from start to finish I ha I'lying Handicap resulted in a win for Ironsides, who was bard pressed by Mon Loup, a locally bred horse. Kathleen won the Handicap Time I rot (two miles) very easily, doing the distance in smin 56sec. The Tuapeka County Jockey Club Haudicap, the big event of the day. was appropriated by Trapper after a splendidly contested race. Nightshade passed the post fust in the stewards' Handicap, closely followed by Ironsides and Shamrock. The Hack Selling Race was a gift to Swagger, who won hands down. Mazurka after a capital race landed her owner the Consolation Stake, Garibaldi beini; second and Laud Leaguer third. Mr Geo Dowse deserves to bn complimented for his handicap. piHg, Which brought about some very close and exciting finishes, making it a very open thing to spot the winners. The totalisator was worked most satisfactorily by Messrs Solomon and Mtirrell throughout the meeting, the sum of £2195 passing through the machino. On ascending the coalpit hill Ironsides improved her position, but Mou Loup and Cameriue were at her quarters on entering the straight A desperate set-to then resulted, ending in Ironsides passing the judge's box half a length in adTauceof Mon Loup, with Camerineand Mazurka close up. On Saturday Tangi gelding and Mokoia were galloped a mile and three-quarters at top—top in so far as Taugi gelding was concerned. La Kose compassed a similar distance at half speed, and Captain Cook and Fairy Maid went twica round at a good rate, as did also Shifnal. St. Ives went seven furlongs steadily, and then raced an additional circuit attended bj Wolverine and Lady Constance. St. Swithin was sent twice I round at three-part speed, and Dispute negotiated a like distauce at a Mower rate. A Wellington telegram states that to-day being Anniversary Day will be observed as a close holiday. Tho Island Bay races, regatta, r.nd Druids' sports are t the principal attractions in I town, while there will be numerous excursions to the country. Tho regatta and sports are expected to attract a large gathering, but the races appear somewhat flat. Russley is the I favourite for the Cup. W. Beam, of Wellington, competed in tho I Good-bye " Handicap for all beaten men at tho Grafton regatta, Now South Wales, on January 3, but he could only gain third place. G. Ashwood (feather) was first, J. M'Kinnon (101b) second and Hearn (301b) third. Three others started Ashwood won by two lengths, but a great struggle took place betweeu M'Kinnon and Hearu for second place, the former just winning. The New Zealand representative attributed his failure to having au inferior boat, which ho sold ' while at Grafton for £20. j A most elaborate article ou the working of the I totalmtor is givi-n in the Lake County Press as the re.Milt of observations made at the recent rrankton meeting. It appears that £207S whs invested, while the total paid out it, dividends /was.i'lß-13 19*, showing that £235 Is had been deducted as commission. But as the 10 per cent commission charged would only amount to A 207 18s, there is a balance of £27 3s unaccounted for, which must consist of sums under Is which the totalisntor people do not pay—quite ft nice little sum to act as au indemnity against paying too much. The net average profit to each winning investor for the whole meeting was £1 3s 4M, while the average dividend (which must not be confused with that) was £3 12s 9d and a fraction.
