Thi s ! should be accomplished by about the first week , in February next, I Homeward Bourn!.—Tho sinking of the main | shaft proceeds at the usual rate, and the erection ! of the steam machinery for working the air com- j pressor is in progress. At present the coni- ' prcssors nre worked by water power, but the supply is likely to be interrupted. Eureka.—The cross-cut having been driven /Oft without meeting with the reef, it has been deoided to prospect in a northerly direction. A fresh cross-cut has therefore been started in that direction. Reform.—Operations continued at a standstill Sir Francis Drake.—The new level is in 155 ft, and the perpendicular of tho winze will be reached m about a month's time. An order is being executed by the Despatch Foundry Company, Greymouth-, for a steam plant and 15-head battery, and a tender for the erection of the same will be let within tho next fortnight. ■The following are the battery returns for tho past_ week:-Keep-it-Dark, 05o* o{ amalgam for the week; Fiery Cross Extended, 2240z of amalgam for the week; Globe, 3J4oz of amalgam ! trom 350 tons. I Welcome.—Up to the present time the north I extension of the reef has not been worked up but work is being pursued in this part of the mine with fairly encouraging prospects. In the meantime stove is being taken out over the intermediate level. South Specimen Hill.—The extension of the mam level has been discontinued for the present, and stone is now being obtained from tho stopes. As soon as a sufficient quantity accumulate a crushing will be started. Keep-it-Dark.—lt was reported on Thursday last tuat a slight improvement was noticeable in the quality of tho stone, but nothing substantial has yet resulted. It is generally thought that it will take about a month or six weeks yet to reach the better part of the block. Just-in-Tiroe.—A report was current yesterday of exceedingly rich stone having been taken out on the low level, but so far the manager has not reported. The report will probably reach here to-morrow. South Hopeful.—Latest accounts are that tiro newly-found reef has sinco split in two a horse of mullock separating tho two seams of quartz, each being about lft thick, The stone is said to be of splendid quality. «,^'° b0;~ The main sbßft is now down between 0011 and (Oft from the level, and it is thought that the required depth will be reached towards tne close of next month. A eleaning-up was made up to the time when crushing was suspended, the result of which is given above. There is absolutely nothing fresh to report regarding other mines, and the slackness in mining matters continues. The value of gold and specie exported from Queensland during ISS7 was £1,215,648. The qu.-iiMfy of gold exported in ISSo" was 8-i,2290z or 23,5360z more than last year. The value of MrQncf P"rt, e<l '" ISSfi WHS -".600,629, or £363,083 worth more than last year. The Coal {.'reek correspondent of the Tuapeka Times says that a " hatter " cleared £1000 out of a littlu patch on the Old Man Kange last season.
