MINING.
She Invincible company
On Wednesday ltol a cake of 4710z 6elwtbf retorted ' gold, fr6m 1011 tons quartz, was brought clown from the Ifivincible Company's mine, Head of the Lake. Tim total yield of tho mine for the whole season has been 21790z 16d\vt from 3175 tons of quartz. Besides this a small parcel of retorted gold, of about 2oz, was obtained from the berdan recently erected by the company, and used last week for the first time. Tlie last-named quantity was the result of a seventh part of tailings from the last week's crushing, which was the poorest crushing the company have ever had. |™ fc« striking proof (saya tlie Lake Wakatipu Mail) of what the company have lost—or, in other words, of the great value the berdan is likely to prove to them in the saving of gold in future operations at the mine. We understand that the last crushing will leave a handsome balance to be placed to the reserve fund, after payment of workingexpenses. Weareals'o informed that operations in the mine are to We Srtspduded during tho wttrst part of the winter, and it is intended to commence again not later than the Ist beptember next—'SaflfeV if practicable. This latter contingency-, hiiwertr, will probably hinge very much on the action of the shareholders at an important special meeting to consider, amongst Other things, the advisability of erecting nioro boraans before commencing to crush -Again*. Although th'o mine lias been proved to be a mdst valuable property, it is hardly likely that the company will neglect the opportunity of erecting irtore berdans, if, by so doing, they can see their way to securing £50 or £60 worth more of the precious "metal as the proceeels of every week's Crushing.
