SPECIAL TELEGRAM. (FBOM OUB OWN OOBRK3PONDKNT.) Wellington, July 24. The Government have received no intelligence as to what took place at Tawhiao's interview with Lord Derby. I understand, howevor, that the latter is receiving the soidisant " king " merely as a Maori chief, having fully recognised the inexpediency of doing anything to encourasrelthe monarchical pretensions of the visitors. It is difficult, in fact, to see what Tawhiao can hope to gain by his trip any more than the last Maori " embassy " did. The Premier, who returned to town last night, and who, it will be remembered, was far from well at the conclusion of the last session, seems now to have entirely recovered his usual hoalth and strength. Mr Oliver has been*confined to his room by an attack of bronchitis during the last few days, but it is now much better, and is expected to ba about again in a day or two. All the remaining Ministers are expected to be in Wellington by Sunday next, and frequent Cabinet meetings will probably be the order of the day after their return. It is jpointed out here that the rejection of Mr T. Kelly for New Plymouth will render vacant the chairmanship of tha Public Petitions Committee, to which a salary of £100 a year, in addition to the honorarium, is attached.

The Evening Post is responsible for the statement that, while it is understood that all parties in the House will concur in the reelection of Sir Maurice O'Rorke as Speaker, Mr Hamlin will be opposed for the Chairmanship of Committees by Mr Steward, member forWaimate. •
