Eight rifle matches, in which there were four prize 3in each, were fired off at the Port Chalmers rifle butts yesterday under the management of Lieutenant Goldie. The firing commenced at 9 a.m. at the 300 yards range, four shots at each, and concluded at 4 p.m. The prizes were not of money bat of kind, given by friends of the Naval Company. They consisted, it may be said, of almost everything, from a needle to an anchor. Several Dunedinites competed, and the arrangements gave universal satisfac.ion. The tea highest aggregate scorers at the mat ches were entitled to extra prizes. The winners were :—Goldie, 81; Wilson, 72 ; Reid, 69 j Taylor, 67 ; Morgan, 66 j M'Gregor, 64 ; Downes, 63 ; Elder, 63 j Calder, 61 ; and Fletcher, 61 points. The wind throughout the day was not favourable to good shooting, as a strong gale blew from the right front in the first part, and variable breezes during the latter part of the matches. At noon the Port Chalmers Naval Volunteers, in^ command of Lieutenant Robertson, fired a royal salute of 21 guns from their 24-pound howitzer, in honour of the birthday of the Queen.
