TRADESMEN'S RACES.
The Tradesmen's Race 3 came off yesterday at the Silverstream course, in the presence of a tolerably good concourse of spectators. Mr J. Stephenson acted as judge ; Mr C. Moore, as starter ; and Mr A. Macdonald, as clerk of the course. The whole of these functions were well performed j and Mr Moore, as scarier*, succeeded in going through his arduous duty with, satisfaction not only to the persons congregated to witness the races, but also to that somewhat difficult to please body, the jockeys themselves.
The first race was the Handicap Hurdle Race cf 15 sovd; entrance, 1 soy ; 1 mile and a distance; heats; over £ flights of hurdles. Mr J. Stephenson's cr m Jenny, syrs, 9stl2lb .....(A. M'Kay) 1 Mr E. Pritchard's b g Chance, 6 yrs, £st 71b ....(Goodman) 2 Mr W. Eoberts'a b g Ancient Mariner, aged, 9st 51b .• ........... (M 'Gregor) 3 Mr A. Smith's b g Sinking Fund, 105b... 0 Mr H. ScoU's br g Harfeaway, 9afc 101b . 0 Mr S. Walker's b g Sir Hugh, Bst 7ib 0 Mr A. M 'Ilroy's b g Surprise, Bafc 71b 0
This race was run ia heats. In the first heat, which was very nicely started, Chance had the lead from the jump, with Sinking Fund close on his quarter, and the first hurdle was. got over without any relative change of distance.. At the second hurdle, however, Jenny crept up and took the place of honour, Surprise at the same time making a slip and coming to grass. At this point Chance had a good second place, but Ancient Mariner came up with a fine spurt and overhauled him making at the same time a fine race down the straight for the lead. The result of this heat was, Jenny, 1 ; Ancient Mariner, 2 ; Chance, 3. In the second heat Chance again got the start, and kept it until the Second hurdle, when Jenny, who perceptibly gained at her jumps, having the faculty of getting over them more rapidly, got alongside, and made the pace warm. At the half-way round there was a beautiful bit of running, the race evidently lying between Chance, Jenny, and Mariner, but at the third hurdle Jenny fell, bringing her rider an unmitigated "cropper" to grief. Sir Hugh fell at the same jump, and was, of course, out of the race. The result of the heat was. Chance 1, Marian 2, Sinking Fund 3.; time, 2 mm. 41 sec. A protest was entered by the rider of Jenny against the rider of Chance, for foul riding,-but was afterwards withdrawn.
The third heat lay between Jenny and Chance, the latter of which got the lead, and made a fine jump over the first hurdle, JenDy however going over ,jt in still better style, and making decidedly the cleanest and prettiest jump of the day. At the"half-way round, Jenny began to put foot and draw up, so that, at the three quarters, the race was a close one. It was, however, evident, coming down the straight, that Jenny had it all to herself. It was a close shave, however, after all, for notwithstanding all the apparent hard holding of her rider until then, Chance had a very good chance of winning, and ran Jenny very close, the mare only getting it by a neck. Time, 2 mm. 40 sec. The next event was the Birthday Handicap, of 25 soys ; 1| mile ; nomination, 1 soy ; acceptance, 1 soy. Mr P. Stanton'B bl m Little Nell, 6 yrs, Bst 12103 ....(Stanton) 1 Mr H. Brown's b g Rising Fund, aged, 7st lOlbs 0 Mr J. Walsh's b g little Tim, 5 yrs, ssfc 121bs „!.......... 0 In this race the horses got away together very nicely, Little Tim getting the advantage at the start, with Ladybird closely following, and at the Grand Stand [ taking the lead. At the half way round
Little Nell let out her stride, and took the first place, keeping it to the finish, when Lady bid came in a fair second, and Vanity a not very good third. Time, 3min. ISsec. The next was the Selling Race of 10 soys., with half the entrance money added ; entrance, 1 soy.; 11----mile ; weight for age ; winner to be sold forL3o. ' q Mr B. Brown's b m Miss Lucy, 4 yt?, 7sfc 81bs; to be sold forLlO. 0 Anadmirable startwas effacted r Mariner taking the pride of place at tRe Jiump, with Outcast close at bis saddle-flaps, and Jenny holding her own in rear. At the halfway round the course Turpin tried a catch, but missed, although he got close up ; and at three-quarters way round, the sight that a sportsman likes to see wa3 exhibited, a sheet would have covered the lot—a rare testimony to th& judgment of the handicappers. At the straight, however, that wary old jockey Lynch pulled his mare Jenny out of the ruck, and won by just about as much as was necessary. Mariner, well ridden by Cunningham, coming in second, anA Dandy Jim, ridden by A. M'Kay, third. Time, 2min. 45sec. The winner was afterwards sold to Mr A. Smith for L 27.
A Hack Race of 5 soys., with entrance money added ; entrance, 10s ; 1 mile ; post entry; catch weights ; winner to> be solely for 15 soys, any surplus to fund. —terminated the day's sport, the race being won by Mr Edwards's JemimaBrown.
The proceedings were got up and carried out in an exceedingly ge2itlemanly and sportsmanlike manner, and the whole of the officers deserve the highest credit for the satisfactory way in which the business was conducted.
