The Committeo of the Otago Benevolent Asylum acknowledge, by advertisement, the receipt of various sums of nv>ney, buns, articles of clothing, aud books presented by diffci-ent persons.
The Loyal Demonstration Committee met last evening, at Wain's HoteL The passing of accounts was postponed until tho subsidy promised by the Government was received. Tlie Sub-Committee appointed to distribute the surplus buns reported that they bad sent to the Benevolent Institution, 500 ; Middle District School, 150 ; South District School, 150; North District School, 200; Catholic School, 100 ; Schools in Octagon and Stafford street, 100 each ; Filleul street, 50; and other schools, 150. A lettor from the Secretary to tho Benevolent Institut:on was received, thanking the Committeo for the donations. The Secretary was instructed to write to his Honor the Superintendent, his Worship the Mayor, aiid Mr J. H. Harris, thanking them for the courteous manner in which they received the various deputations, and for the assistance rendered iv carrying out the demonstration. Mr James Smith wrote, apologising for his absence from tho meeting on Monday. He had been informed that the demonstration would not take place. On the motion bf Mr Pyke, seconded by Mr Rogers,- it was unanimously resolved, *' That the thanks of tho Committee be given to the Chairman, for his resolute stand against any postponement of proceedings on the day observed as Her Majesty's Birth Day." An amateur entertai'iment was held by the Caversham Sub-division South District Rifle gangers, in the Drill t^hed there, in aid of the Building Fund, on the evening of Thursday last The night-was fine and the room was well filled, a goodly number of tho fair sex honoring the performance with their presence. The programme consisted of essays, readings, and songs; the local talent being ably assisted by several of the most popular readers and song singers from Dunedin. A very pleasant- evenipg wasi passed; and hopes were freely expressed, that tins might be followed by similar entertainments during the winter months, which, we understand, it is the intention of the Company to cany oot.
