TASMANIA.
By the Dart we have Hobart Town papers to the 2ist November, from which we make the following extracts; —
Alleged Gold Discovery at Port Arthur.
Captain Gourlay, 6f the steamer Culloden, upon his arrival fi-om Port Arthur yesterday, politely handed to us some specimens of quartz highly impregnated, with gold, and said to have beeu found at Settlement Point, Port Arthur. Captain Hinds, to whom the discovery is attributed, handed the specimens to Mr Boyd, the Commandant, assuring bim that they had been found at' the spot where, men' were employed in getting gravel. The newß, as a natural consequence, caused considerable excitement, and the men employed at the spot were removed to other places of labor. It is to be regretted that the Commandant did. not cause a strict search tc be made, and so have at once cleared up, what at present can only be -treated with extreme caution. We give the above facts as they reached us, without in any way rendering ourselves responsible for their accuracy. The specimens can be seen at this office. —Mercury. t - V
