WAIMATE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
ANNUAL SPORTS
The thirtv-seventh annual sports meeting of th<> Waimate Caledonian Society was held yesterday, in \ tetoria P:uk. 'l'lie g;ite money amonnteel to £77 2s Od. asoompnred with £llO taken hist year.. The smaller attendance was due to the unpromising weather. In tlie morning intermittent dnzzling rani fell, hut the weather improved greatly ab f »ut noon, though the .sky "was o\ercast and tlie wind chilly. 'J 110 sports were well carried out, but there was a decrease in cycling and particularly 111 I'unninir entries. Ihe number oi good class competitors in running was very -mall, and though the handicaps allowed were verv liberal, none of the new men showed very good l'oim. and the back maikers. \\ . Baker and W - *1 • .< won mont of the prix.e money. The cvding events were mainly noticeable tor the good. riding or the St. Andiews cyclist. H. O'Neill, who gave- ;iway considerable handicaps and won two races from the .scratch mark. 'I he entries for dancing. wrestling, tossing the caber, and other ring items were quite up to previous numbers. The biggest items were the fire brigade events;. The first consisted in complex coupling of liose and branch work. The reel and ladders race, for which three teams of'five men each competed, was perhaps more interesting, quick and clever work being done. The third event was of quite a | different style. In this "rescues ' from a platform some twenty feet in height were made. Tossing the sheaf, a new contest for Waimate, drew no less than thirty-one entries, and so keen was the contest that it took up tlie best part of the afternoon to decide. The winning men threw the 171b sheaf equally wetl up to the last throw, when. L. Quinn, Pleasant Point, succeeded in beating his last opponent. During the afternoon the Waimate Brass Band 1 played seleotions, and at the conclusion of the programme the pipers marched round 1 the ring. Thougti the attendance was not so large as that of last year, the gathering from every standpoint was a great success.
