WAITAKI GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF DRAWINGS. To-day's exhibition of school work in 'the"studio at the Waitaki Girls' High School is a reminder that another school vacation is at hand. The exhibition is open to parents and friends of tie pupils, a large number of whom availed themselves of the opportunity to inspect _ and appraise the advancement made 111 an important department of a. young lady's education during the year that is fast drawing to a close. Under Miss M'Caw's tuition considerable progress has been made, each year showing; v an improvement on its pi-ede-eessor, while 011 this years work is impressed the additional merit of allround excellence. Of courso it would be palpable exaggeration to say that every drawing is good when judged by the. same standard, lor there are apparent those differences one would expect to meet when comparing u :;tu(iy 'from .a cast which is the work of a hogiuner, with a study from the same cast, the work of a pupil with several years' tuition to guide her. All the work shown is this year's work and all this year's work is shown, so that the space afforded by the large studio is severely taxed. A good series of drawings is the examination work, in connection with which the model set for the senior pupils, was a bowl with arum lilies, and for the juniors a vase with grass. The studies from still life and from casts make a good collection, the former demonstrating the encouargement given to the pupils to arrange their own models. During Miss Fergusson's recent visit to Rome she secured a. number of exquisite easts, and these now find thencounterpart in the drawings adorning the studio walls. Touching tho more advanced work, the friezes and panels show the progress made during the past few. years in brush work. These are an outstanding feature of the display on account of the originality of design as well as from the point of view of merit. An opportunity will be afforded of viewing the exhibition this evening. During the afternoon a large number visited the school.
