A GAS FAMINE.

The city is threatened with a gas famine owing to the dismissal by the Gas Company of the secretary of the Employees' Union. The employees declaim that his dismissal is the result of his connection with the union';- but the company states that he was dismissed because he is in ill-health. The majority of» the employees struck, but resumed pending a conference, failing which they threaten that the output of the Queensland mines will be stopped. The Minister of Works has undertaken to mediate. Received July 13, at 0.55 a.m. Brisbane, July 12. The majority of the gas employees have struck, and the city is in semidarkness.
