WAIMATE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(Fboh Ouit Own Cokrespoxdent. ) ' The Waimatc Borough Council met- last evening, when there were present his Worship' the Mayor and Councillors Inkster, Nicol, Manchester! Morgan, Hunt-, Buckingham, Hutt, and Sanders. Councillor Miller forwarded an apology for absence. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr S. J. Adams wrote stating that- upon applying to the Gas Company for a service to his residence, the company had demanded the cost of the mains (£10), and ho Relied the Council to define tho position.—lt was resolved to forward acopy of the letter to the Gas Company, with a request for an explanation. The contractor for the borough scavenging wrote asking for an adjustment of his payments —Resolved that the Chairman of the Sanitary Committee and the Town Clerk make the adjustment asked for. Mr J. Jamieson wrote asking the Council to effect repairs to Hillary street, between the Gorge road and Queen street.— It was decided to make temporary repairs at- once, and that further work on the street be'provided for in preparing next year's estimates. Permission was granted to the Smithfield Freezers' Picnic Committee to use tho Domain for their annual picnic on Saturday, April 3rd-. J. W. Freeman wrote asking for a refund of rates. —This was referred to the Water Committee for a report. The special order making t-lie consolidated by-law-was confirmed, and the bylaw sealed and signed by the 1 Mayor and Councillors. This by-laiv was first put in hand in February, 1907, and after having had it on and off for over two years the Council heaved several sighs of relief after signing the completed work. fn pursuance of notice of motion, the resolution passed at the previous meeting regarding the supervision of tho baths was rescinded. The Water Committee reported recommending the appointment of a- permanentwater works inspector who should have practically full charge of the water matters, including the baths.—The Town Clerk was appointed water inspector at a salary of £26 per year. The recommendation of tho committee that the profit of £ll 2s 8d made over the swimming sports be disposed of by donating £6 to the Swimming Club and using the balance to paint the floor and walls of the baths was adopted. The inspector was asked to make a report to the Water Committee regarding water consumers who have more than one service on a single assessment. The Sanitary Committee reported that they had decided that the contractor was only required to remove dry refuse on his Saturday rounds, and that- dust tins be of a size not larger than an ordinary livegallon oil drum. it was resolved to raise tho dustman's pay from 7s to 10s per day. Accounts amounting to £4l 6s were passed for payment.
