WELLINGTON. November 3.
The expenses incurred ii America in connection with the extradition of Dr Orpen, who was arrested in San Francisco for the alleged murder of the girl M'Callam in Auckland, of which he has since been found not guilty, amounted to L 289, an account for which has just been received from the United States Government. The lonic left Plymouth on the 29th October for Wellington and Lyttelton. Arrived—Star of England, from Napier. Mr H. F. Smith, senior electrical mechanician of the Telegraph Department, died this morning after a long illness, aged 62. He was one of the oldest telegraph officials in the colony, having joined the Department under the Canterbury Provincial Government in 1863. He was one of the party which laid the first telegraph wire between Christchurch and J)unedin. PUNEDIN. November 3. The prosecutions against the bookmakers are being heard before Mr Oarew. The case against Moss is being take?? first. It transpired that the police had supplied witnesses with money to make investments. Mr Fraser is prosecuting, and Mr Sim defends. Moss was fined LSO and Hoops and Dalziel, his assistants, L 5 each. AUCKLAND. November 2. ■Willi jregard to the reported withdrawal from New Zealand of the Anglo-Conti-nental Gold Syndicate, Mr H. A. Gordon, general manager, .states that he has no knowledge of the and expresses the opinion that there is no troth in the report. As a matter of fact instructions have been received by him for an extenr aion of some of the options held by the syndicate. November 3.
A private cable received to-day states that the war rates current on London steamers from the United Kingdom to Aus&sjia and New Zealand are 2s 6d per cent, sailing vessels, and 53 per cent, steamers; vessels and steamers from New Zealand or Australia to the United Kingdom 5s per cent.; gold, 2s 6d per cent; neutral vessels, whether steamers or sailers, 2a <sd per cent. Neutral means vessels flying flags other than British or Freifch. HAWERA. November 2. The poll on the proposal of the Borough Council to borrow L36 v 500 to carry out a water and drainage system, street improvements, and loan repayment, was taken to-day, and resulted in the proposal being carried by a large majority.
