INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.

Dctnedin, January 12. After an adjournment for lunch, the Otago team entered upon their second innings, Cargill and Crawshaw being the ; first to wield the willow. When 19 had; been obtained, Cargill was dismissed by : Firth, and Crawshaw was shortly afterwards run out. Conway played a fine ; free-hitting innings of 49, for which he received an ovation. To his determined' stand and free punishment is solely attributable the fact that a one-inmngs ; defeat was averted, for with the exception: of Spring none of the remaining Otago njeu made any stand. Clark, Paramor,; and Collinson, all good bats, were caught: out before they had a chance of doing! anything, and the rest fell victims to the! superior bowling of Frith, Fuller, and' Ashby. The second innings of the Otago! representatives terminated for 99, thus leaving the Canterbury team 15 to get to: win. These they did not succeed in ob-; taining without the loss of a wicket, Alpef

being dismissed by M'Lennan- without scoring. Ashby joined J. Fowler, and the pair put together the required number of runs. Again Otago was beaten, and that; most unmistakeably by a confessedly weak team. This result is greatly to be attributed to the superior bowling and fielding of the Canterbury men, departments of the game in which they are immeasurably superior to - the! Otago players. All through the' match' there was. exhibited by the "Otago team an amount of carelessness in the field simply reprehensible, and undoubtedly the | outcome of the; loose manner in which'they practice. who has: proved himself a decided acquisition to the Otago ; j cricket' field, gave Some idea how the game should be played, and could the Dunedin cricketers be induced to place themselves under his guidance and tuition, an improvement might be effected; but unless something „pf, the land is done, there seems "noi hope at-' Otagobeing able to wipe off the disgrace, of continual defeat. Conway deservedly- obtained a trophy given by Messrs. Kohn and Co. for the highest "scorer on the Qtaga side. The following afe the complete scores of the match 1—
