(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, January 13. At the Police Court this morning, two young men were charged with stealing three coffins from the yard of an auctioneer, but the cases were dismissed, as the it was proved that it arose out of a New Year's eve joke. The civil sittings of the Supreme Court commenced this morning. The case of Bash v. Williams, a claim for LSOO as damages for false imprisonment, is being heard. Sub-Lieutenant Leary, of the Wellington Naval Brigade, has resigned in accordance with the finding of the Court of Inquiry held to' investigate the charge made with reference to Leary's misconduct. It is understood that the Royal Commission on Native Affairs will consist of Sir Francis Dillon Bell, Sir William Fox, and Mr. Tawhia. DUNEDIN. January 12. C. Bode, hairdresser and tobacconist, was drowned in the harbor yesterday by the upsetting of a dingy. Mr. Jellett's horses, Richmond and Bosworth, engaged in the Dunedin Cup, are engaged to leave Melbourne for the Bluff about the end of the month. Instructions have been received to engage quarters. CHRISTCHURCH. January 12. Nearly eighty copies of a petition are in course of signature throughout the city, asking the Licensing Court to permanently close Barrett's Hotel. Already 2000 signatures have been received. January 13. At. yesterday's meeting of the Drainage Board, a member referred to the rumor prevalent in Christchurch that a contractor uuder the Board was carryiug out the truck system with his men. The members cf the Board were unanimous in the condemnation of any approach to such system. The engineer called attention to the clause dealing with such a case, and no further action was taken. It may be mentioned that this rumor has become very common since the recent riot. During the present sparrow season, at E3 7 reton, seven thousand eggs and eight hundred birds were destroyed. At the present session of the Primitive Methodist District Meeting, now being held here, a new system was established providing that one member out of every twenty, or fraction of twenty, be elected as representative to the church meetings, the object being to secure direct church representation at official meetings. Among other work done during the session the District Insurance Fund has been floated for the insurance of church property in New Zealand. On Monday 'afternoon' a cottage near Waverly, in the FJaxton district, belonging to Mr. JameS'Kinley, was destroyed by fire. The cause is not known. The building was insured in the Liverpool and London office for LIOO. The heavy rain through last night, and continuous though light rain this morning, are making people look very serious with regard to ripening crops. AUCKLAND. January 13. On Sunday they delivered several discourses at the Cook-street Friendly Societies' Hall. The yacht Pinafore was wrecked during a gale last night in the harbor, but 110 lives were lost. Frederick Wardell fell off the Railway Wharf, and sustained serious injuries. A man was drowned while attempting to reach a boat off Lome Bay this morning. One of the hands on board the Kina fell overboaad yesterday, but was rescued by Captain M'G-regor. Crushing in the Alburnia Mine is showing up well. NEW PLYMOUTH. January 13. An old native named Tawahere Tawhata was found dead in a paddock, and is supposed to have been killed by a kick from a horse. timaru. January 12. In more than one field of oats this year the stalks are between six and seven feet long, with corresponding large heads. The harvesting of oats will be general in another week. INVERCARGILL. . January 12. Yesterday Thomas Williamson, _ aged eleven, was drowned whilst bathing in the Makarewa River. Edward Turner, a stowaway during the last trip of the Rotorua, died in the Hospital on Saturday. He was kicked in the abdomen by a horse on the 7th instant.
