(I'EK PRESS association). WELLINGTON. August 21. A magnificent bust of the celebrated chief Te Hapuku, of Napier, has just been completed. The bust was ordered by the Government, and will cost L2OO. A'rifle match was fired to-day between detachments from the Wellington Artillery and H.M.S. Emerald. After an exciting contest the latter were victorious by one point. The following are the total scores : Emerald, 357 ; Artillery, 386. The Emerald men fired with Mar-tini-Henry rifles, which gave them advantage as against the Snider carbines used by the Artillery, especially at the longer ranges. August 22. Morton Quin, late secretary of the Ancient Order of Forresters, was committed for trial this morning, for embezzling the sum of L 9 10s, the moneys of the Order. A deputation waited on the Minister for Public Works this morning, relative to placing the unemployed at work on the railwaj-. Mr. Macandrew replied that every endeavor was being made to get tenders out for the railways sanctioned, and the unemployed would be taken on the works, which would probably be commenced in a month. CHRISTCHURCH. August 21. The number of sheep in the District of Canterbury on May 31, was 3,371,904. Some time ago two guineas were offered as a prize to the first who flew pigeons from Dunedin to Christchurch. Yesterday morning Mr. Donogue sent two birds down, which were liberated at eight this morning. They arrived at Christchurch at 1.45 p.m., thus taking less than six hours to do 230 miles. The amount allotted to the North Canterbury Board of Education out of the annual grant is L 17,500. DUNEDIN. August 21. At a meeting of intending exhibitors at the Sydney Exhibition to-day, it was resolved to send Mr. George Grant to Sydney as special agent in connection with the exhibits, subject to the necessary funds being raised. It is reported on good authority that Mr. Conyers, Commissioner for the Middle Island railways, is likely to return to Duuedin to make it his head-quarters. Three more informations for embezzlement have been laid against Mr. Chalmers Eeid. AUCKLAND. August 21. At an inspection of the Volunteer Engineers, Captain Anderson read a letter received from the Taranaki Settlers Defence Association, thanking the Company for offers of assistance in case of emergency. He also intimated that Lieut. Kitchen had resigned his commission. Captain Anderson presented Sergeant Dawson with a handsome sword in recognition of his services. Horse stealing by natives is prevalent on the Waikato frontier. There is exhibited a beautiful inlaid cabinet, by Seull'ert, consisting of thirtytwo different woods, with a gold key. It has been made to the order of Dr. Buller, for presentation to the Emperor of German}', with a copy of his " Birds of New Zealand." A telegram has been received from the Public Works Department, Wellington, instructing the District Engineer to notify for tenders for railway workshops at Newmarket immediately.
