ELECTION GOSSIP.
"Wellington. August 21. Mr. C. O'Neil has consented to stand for Wellington country districts on the Liberal ticket. August, 22. Mr. Izard, candidate for the Wellington country district, addressed the electors at Ohariu last night. A vote of confidence was passed. Dusedix, August 21. Mr. de Lautour addressed a, crowded meeting at St. Uathans last night, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. The nomination for Port Chalmers is fived for August 30th and the polling for September sch. A requisition is being signed, asking Mr. H. S. Fish to come out for the city. Mr. Orbell has definitely declined to stand for "Waikouaiti.
( The City of Dunedin nomination is fixed for 28th August, and the polling for 2nd September. The Roslyn nomination takes place on the 29th August, and the polling on the sth September. The Caversham nomination will be on the Ist September, and the polling on the 9th September. A meeting of working men was held last evening to consider the advisability of bringing forward a candidate to represent the working classes in the coming election. It was ultimately decided to adjourn, and if possible to amalgamate with the proposed Liberal Association to be formed £-t the Provincial Hotel on Friday evening. Mr. J. JM'lndoe, the candidate for Caversham, addressed the electors last evening, and announced himself a Greyite. Cheistchuech, August 21.
Mr. ,S. P. Andrews, the Liberal candidate for Christchurch, is a prominent Good Templar. A great welcome will be given to Sir G. Grey by the Liberal Association.
Auckland, August 21. Mr. J. [S. Shephard announces his candidature for the Bay of Islands. It is proposed to form a branch of the Liberal Association at the Thames.
Mr. J. P. Campbell stands for Waikaio in the Liberal interest. Mr. R. H. D. Fergusson will also stand as an independent candidate.
To prevent splitting the Liberal vote at the Thames over the three Liberal candidates, it is proposed to select some one acceptable to the electors, to run with Mr. Sheehan.
August 22. Mr. Murdoch M'Leod announces himself a candidate for Waipa. Wangajoji, August 22. Mr. Ballance addressed the electors at Waverley last night. There was a crowded attendance. This was supposed by Sir W. Fox to be his stronghold, and his supporters mustered in full strength, and put their own chairman up. Mr. Ballance spoke for two hours. A vote of confidence waa moved, followed by an amendment of no confidence. On a vote being taken,
33 voted for and 46 against the amendment. A few electors only voted. The original motion was then carried amidst enthusiastic cheers. Sir W. Fox's Committee confidently depended on carrying the Waverly district. The vote practically decided the election, as the town of Wanganui has already decided for Messrs. Bryce and Ballance. For Rangitikei, Mr. M'Lean carried a motion of confidence by 38 to 36 at Marton. Paijierstox North, August 22. 'Mr. Johnston addressed a meeting last night. Mr. Dungan asked him to mention one single benefit he had been the means of conferring on Manawatu. Mr. Johnston made several attempts to sit down, but Mr. Dungan still persisted. Mr. Johnston said he could not answer right off, and the reply was received with ironical cheers. A vote of thanks was moved, and a vote of confidence proposed, but the latter did not find a seconder. Timaru, August 21. Mr. John Studholme received a vote of confidence at Pleasant Point last night. Invercargill, August 21. The writs have arrived. The Invercargill nomination takes place on August 28th, and the polling on September Ist. The Mataura nomination is on August 29fch, and the polling on September sth.
