IMPORTANT TO PUBLICANS.

(per press agency.) Ashborton, Dec. 3. At the sitting of the Quarterly Licensing Court to-day an important question arose when the case of the Railway Hotel, South Rakaia, was brought before the Court. It appeared that the present occupant of the house, Mr. Wallace, had sent in no application. The holder of the original license, Mr. Grant, had sold the house and premises to Mr. Devery, who at the time obtained a temporary transfer of the license till to-day (3rd December). Not long after, Mr. Devery became the possessor of the house and premises, he sold his interest in the business to Mr. Wallace, and the question, as the Court took it, arising out of these circumstances was whether the house should forthwith be closed, or whether the original license still remained good. The Bench considered that the original license still existed, but that no one except Mr. Grant, or some one specially authorised by him could continue to carry on the business of the house. Anyone who should continue to sell liquors in the house would have to do so at his own risk.
