Dr. C. Owen brings later New Cale(l'Hiian news. At the settlement of Pooza t!i<- House of Hervaille was burnt and pillaged, leaving no trace of the owner. On the 14th of September an engagement took place between the auxiliaries and the insurgents. Six of the latter were killed and many were made prisoners. Another engagement was expected on the following day. Stations at K me were burnt and pillaged. Twenty-s x refugees have arrived at N"Umea from Kone, having fled from their stations. The Kanakas have lent assistance in saving the lives of persons there. A great revolt is expected in the district, and the troops have been advised to leave. It is believed Hon dace has been taken alive by the natives of Adios. The Kanakas of Bourail abandoned their villages, and a detachment of marines have been ordered to reinforce the district with militia. Beuzody has been appointed superior officer there. The situation is considered critical. The family of Lamaismi, at Kone, was assassinated, Lamaison alone escaping. A military post has been formed at Ourao, a village situated at the Riva V.-illey. near Bourail. The Kanakas who killed the family of Tjiimaison, belong to the tribe of Penidi Piuli. The Chief has aiven orders to the Kanakas of Kone, to kill all the whites. This chief was arrested, but managed to escape during the night. A subscription list in aid of the sufferers by the revolt was opened, and 28,082 francs subscribed, An encounter occurred at Aio, between the troops and the rebels, on the 14th. The Kanakas, numbering 150, were entrenched behind palisides. Garcan, a Lieut, of Marines, commanded the attacking party. It is estimated that 35 rebels were killed and wounded, but all the bodies with the exception of four ■

were carried off. Four friendly Kanaka* and two soldiers were wounded. The - rebels fled. Much booty and plunder were found in their camp. The effects of the unfortunate soldiers killed at Boula- 1 pare were all discovered here. Many J rebels were armed with guns, but had no ammunition. 1 Near the village of St. Pierre, eight friendly nativs were pursued by rebels who attacked them with stones. On August 24th Port Lafoa was attacked by the insurgents, numbering 700 j strong. The attack lasted two hours, and was most serious. The rebels at- j tacked the fort with showers of stones, and also discharged several guns. They employed European tactics, making a false attack from the side of the river, while 2 •it the same time a considerable number of insurgents emerged from a bush on the opposite side, and precipitated themselves upon the fort, where they were welcomed with a brisk fnsilade. The soldiers had orders not to fire until they had made sure of their man. Two persons were ] wounded on the Government side, while the number of insurgents killed and wounded was 30. Next day a newly cut road, along which the wounded rebels had been carried, was found covered with - blood. An expedition, consisting of 35 men, started from the fort next morning, , in pursuit of the rebels. They got close to them, and attacked them on three different sides. They succeeded in getting so near to the rebels that they were able to attack them with revolvers and guns. The attack was returned with showers of stones. Ten insurgents were left dead . on the field, and it is certaiu a large number were wounded but escaped. On September 2nd, it was announced at Canola that the CMef Oti, his son, and eleven rebels, had been killed by friendly Kanakas, under the order of Serviens. Fifty-six women and children were also | made prisoners. On the succeeding day : t was announced that the Chief Baptiste "f Momdon had been surprised and killed, and his Kanakas put to night, the j soldiers being under the orders of St. ! Marchal.
