ST. LUKE'S SUPPLEMENTARY BAZAAR.
I The supplementary buz.-iar in aid of the ; | funds for the St. Luke's parsonage was i opened yesterday at Mr. Sumpter's new | I grain store. The attendance was not so j I as was anticipated, a number of ! ! people being otherwise engaged and the j I early part of the evening so boisterous, but j ] those who attended s,n;-ni<>d to enjoy them- I ! selves, and to take delight in the various j ! operations by which their cash was trans- ! i ferred from their pockets to the Parson- | j rt'.;e Fund. Tiie young ladies of Oamaru j j displayed no small amount of business ; | capacity, and were quite equal to many of j ! thti.se whom we have seer, behind counters j |in drapers' shops. We. intend thin as j complimentary. i>, was of no use refusing tog'-ant'li-irrequests; for although one : might object, '"at, the first blush," when the ' .-eecpnd appeared il.uiuiuatirig the sadly ' hopeful f, aiur.s of the fair petitioner ■ one's hands fell helplessly into one's! " pockets and it was a case of capitulation, j But, as in everything else, circumstances j ■ arose to somewhat mar the success of the i i proceedings. For instance, the flower ! stall kept by Miss Gifford and a number i of other young ladies was only a shadow | of what it ought to have been, because of j the delay that occurred in the trausporta- j tion by rail of a large number of i choice trees and plants from Dunedin. J This will, however, be rectified to-night, j • and other improvements made which will i i both delight the eye and assist in relievi ing the purses. We must not forget to t mention that the singing of some glees ; under the direction of Mr. George Finch ' enlivened the proceedings. Soma pretty ', and artistic water-color paintings by] Eo3enberg, presented by Mr. E. Gifford, ! ■ adorn the walls of the room, and will ] probably find their way into someone's ' drawing-room before the Bazaar is over. : There are many other things to be s< en and heard at the Bazaar, but we find •■ that :'t would occupy so much space to ' enumerate them all that we would recom--5 mend everybody to spend a shilling for i the purpose of seeing them. The receipts . . up to last night were : —Doer, L 7 16s 6d; !fl .wer stall, LS Is : Mrs. Gilford's stall, j L4l 4s 0,1. Total, L 57 2s 3d.
