Dvjnedin. July 12. The following special cablegrams have been received by the Star : Sydney, July 11.

The cause of the New Caledonia rising is as follows :—Some chiefs had been held as hostages for the delivery of the murderers of a settler. The Natives rescued them, and devastated the settlement. The state •of the island is critical, the military force b;,ing small. Unless France rescues the settlors, it is possible that England will be asked to annex the island.

The Sappho brings four destitute men from New Guinea. They report that payable- gold is not discovered. The weather impedes operations; game is plentiful; the Natives are friendly.
