January 5. Owing to the fact that the Canterbury men will not arrive in Wellington in time to play on Monday, the luterprovinoial Matoh has had to be postponed till Tuesday next. It is generally understood the day will be kept as a semi-holiday. The newly - organised Amalgamated Friendly Societies Funeral Reform Association is making considerable progress. It has been resolved that the wives of members of the various Friendly Societies should be permitted to become members of the Association. The Association, itis thought, will adopt the rules of the Victorian Society, under which a person can be buried plainly for L2 155., or with coach and pair for L 3 Jcja,
January 5. The race-horse Musician lias been sold by Mr Buekiand tcTMr. Kelly for MOO. Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach have purchased the vessels belonging Sto Mr. Howard, trading on the West Coast, including the Amaranthe. the Atlantic, the Fiery Cross, and the ketch Wild Duck. January 5. The Hon. Mr. Sheehan has telegraphed to the Mayor, stating that the Hinemoa, with Sir George Grey, will arrive here on Monday. The speechifying is to take place an hour after his arrival. A. meeting of natives is to take place to-night to pass resolutions relating to grievances and wrongs to be submitted for redress on Monday to Sir George Grey and Mr. Sheehan. The Hin>-nma leaves on Tuesday morning for Wellington.

January 6. A largely attended meeting of the Greymouth Coal Company was held last night, wiien the present position and future prospects of the company were discussed. It was resolved that the capital should be increased by the issue of 8000 new shares of LI each, LI paid up. The directors were also authorised to mortgage the mine and plant for a sum not exceeding L4OOO. in order to secure themselves in giving their " joint and several" to the bank for an o\erdraft to meet current expenses. It was generally understood that the directors would not find it necessary to exercise this power, but that the possession of it would facilitate their negotiations with the bank. On all hands the greatest confidence in the ultimate success of the mine was expressed.
January 7. There was a fire at Havelock yesterday. It began at Dive's store, in the show-room and spirit-room, the adjoining buildings, that of Willi mis (shoemaker), Doiislinu (butcher), and Mexted (blacksmith), were ii.ll burnt out. Dive saved nothing ;he was insured. Williams was only partially insured, while the others were not insured at all. Dousling and Maxted saved mosi of their goods. The total loss is probably iiGOOO. No idea of the origin of the fire can be formed.
