October 8.
The Roman Catholics made a special collection towards defraying the expenses of the Rev. Father Henneberry, and over LIOO was collected. This was the only collection in aid of the mission.
Forty Union shares were sold to-day at 135., being a premium of Bs. Haggerty's third trial for arson is postponed till Thursday. It is said that after this session of Parliament the Hon. W. Fox will undertake a lecturing tour throughout the Colony to promote the cause of temperance. It is freely stated that Government will still command a majority at the forthcoming division in consequence of their being likely to be certain of an unexpected defection from the Opposition side, as well as from the Government party. CHRISTCHURCH. October 8. Mahoney, convicted of stealing type, was brought up to-day, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with hard labour. The prospectus of the Alliance Company has not yet appean-d. AUCKLAND. October 8. The Acclimatisation Society has received the first shipment of Californiati quail from Mr. T'»ouris Russell. A shipment of several thousand is txpected to follow.
T.ie South British Insurance Company's naif-yearly meeting report showed that the fire and marine premiums amounted to L 58.441 ; interest, L 348 9; transfer fees, L 33 10s ; increased value of investments, LI6BO ; balance from last halfyear, LlO/J62 ; total, L7"),512. Fire and marine losses paid and outstanding, L 36,0 8; reinsuranc s and other expenses, L19,5G3 ; balance of profit, L 13,459. The heavy losses on the Ocean Mail and Qneen Bee rendered this halfyear less profitable than last. A dividend of 13 per cent, is paid. The reinsurance amounted to LBOOO. Arrived : Dunedin, .schooner, from Oamaru. ♦ KITMARA. October 9. William John Galvin, Mary Dowuie, James William Daniels, and Jo.in Gilman have been examined in the charge of murder against Ryan. Tiere is no doubt as to the identity of the body ami the commission of a foul murder, but t lereis nothing to c.mneet the Commission of the crime as yet. Ovt-rn dozen witnesses have yet to be examined for the prosecution. ♦ NELSOX. October 8. Mr. Mabin has sold by auction the corner section of Trafalgar and Hardy streets for L 1950. Mr. Dodson was the purchaser for the Colonial Bank.
