TELEGRAMS.

(from the press agency.)

WELLINGTON

October 1

It is understood that the New Zealand Government has received representations from the Governments of the Australian Colonies to the effect that it is not desirable to continue sp-.-ci d war telegrams from their respective Agents-General, and that the New Z.-aland Government have concurred in this view.

There is considerable talk as to members of the House of Representatives being disqualified. The following names a>e mentioned as likely to come under the Disqualification Act: —Lartnch, Bastings, Reynolds, Whitakor, Lusk, and Burns. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court opened to-day. The cases were : —Arson, one ; embezzlement, one ; forgery, one ; murder, two; receiving stolen goods, one; rape. one. William Cook, found guilty of forgin" an endorsement on a bill, was senteiiced to four months' imprisonment. In the evidence taken before the Grand Jury, it was sated that he had recent'y come from a Christchurch boot manufactory. The charge or child-murder against Mary 1 eonard Mmidway and Mary Ann Trueman, her mother, occupied the Court the greater portion of the day. Mr. Travers appeared for tho defence. The case was not concluded at S o'c'ock. October 2.

Mary Leonard Mudgway, charged with child mur.ler, and also concealment of birth, was found guilty of the latter. She will not be sentenced until her mother Mary An i Trueman, who is also implicated in the same crime, is tried. The ptismiers were indicted separately on the application of Mr. Travers.

AUCKLAND. October 1. The criminal sessions began this morning. In his charge to the Grand Jury, Mr. Justice Gillies said there were light calendars of late sessions, and the offences were of a light character. There was also a total absence from the list of habitual criminals. This seemed to indicate that this class was either rooted out. or all were in prison. Thi* being so, he could not avoid the reflection that it was highly desirable to keep the offenders apart from other criminals, and so prevent the gaol being made a hot-bed of crime. He was sorry to say there was no such provision or possibility for such classification in the Auckland Gaol, and he should consider it his duty to make a representation on the matter to the proper authorities. He hoped the Grand Jury would aid him. To enable them to see for themselves, he should direct the Sheriff to place carriages at their disposal to enable them to go to the Gaol, and otherwise inquire into what was applicable to particular cases.

A large number of Union shares were sold to-day at irom os. to lis. premium.

CHRISTCHURCH, October \. A preliminary meeting of the promoters of the new Insurance Company was held todav. The result has not transpired. The The principal movers in it are said to be Messrs. J. L. Coster, Manager of the Hank of New Zealand, and F. Wilson, of the firm of Wilson and 'Sawtell. The new company is not likely to .meet with much support here, ii'he general opinion seems to be that that there is not room for another company; besides which, a majority of the begt busir ness houses here are already connected with the Union Company, and the Standard Company has notified its intention at once to make a second issue of 50/000 shares. The formation of the.i branch line of railway to the racecourse "i-! to be commenced on behalf of the Canterbury Jockey Club this week, and is to be completed before the ensuing races Tne criminal sessions of the Supreme Court < pened to-diy. murder, on which he dealt at some length. Thomas Bray Gill, for larceny, was Ben- ' tenced to six years, and Karl Klintoff, fo: horse-stealing, to three years. The Gram Jury returned a true bill against Karl Kehd for wilful murder. October 2. It is authoritatively denied that Mr. J.
