A NEW VENTILATOR.

The Melbourne Argus has been shown plans and specifications of a new ventilator, which it is proposed to introduce into the Colony. It is called an- "improved compound ventilator, effecting both plenum and vacuum," which means that it will either force fresh air into a chamber or suck out that which, is already there, leaving its place to be supplied by an influx of air from the outside. The apparatus can be worked by hand, horsey or steam power, according to the nature and extent of the work to be done. It is claimed for the apparatus that it can be used to cool or to heat chambers as well as to replace the air in them. Beneath the inhabited, or otherwise occupied, apartment there is a cellar in which to store ice, to cool air brought within its influ-

ence; or heated air, according as it is intended to lower or raise the temperature of the upper apartment, and as the air is sucked out of that it is replaced with cold or hot air, as the emergencies of the time happen to demand. Both cold and hot air are so delivered that their supply will not give rise to disagreeable draughts. For hospital uses the apparatus is said to be particularly valuable, inasmuch as by its means vitiated or poisoned air is carried oft' direct from patients' bedsides to the opening communicating with the outside air. By means of ornamental fittings and adjuncts, the apparatus is adapted to private dwellings as well as to public institutions. The system is worth the attention of architects and others interested in the subject of ventilation.
