WHAT'S IN A NAME.

The Belfast News Letter states that a Mr. John Smith, a grocer, of Halifax, in North America, levanted a few years since, but made ample provision for the liquidation in full of all claims upon him. Time rolled on, and Mr. John Smith was forgotten. Meanwhile, a Mr. Amor de Cosmos, who had achieved a wonderful success in British Columbia, was returned as a member of Parliament, and took his seat in the Canadian House of Commons of which he is at this moment a member. On presenting himself to take his seat at Ottawa, he was recognised as the long missing John Smith, of Halifax. His friends naturally asked for an explanation of his change of name and calling, upon which he declared that he had dropped the one and changed the other because an experience of many years had convinced him that no man could get on in the world with the burden of such a name as John Smith.
