SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

(from our own correspondent.) Dunedin, Saturday. VALIDITY OF RUN LEASES. An interesting case occurred at the Queenstown Court this week. The Superintendent seeks to recover £495 from William Paterson, a runholder, for rent of a run licensed under the Depasturing Regulations. For the defence, several important points were raised which, if considered fatal to the Superintendent's powers, will probably annul all the licenses on the goldfields. The main points are that the Governor having delegated the powers conferred on him by the Goldfields Act to the Executive Government, the latter coidd not re-delegate those powers to the Superintendent; that the Depasturing Regulations are ultra vires, and that the term being for seven years, should be by deed, as provided in Act. Judge Harvey reserved his decision, but which ever side be successful, an appeal will follow. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. The Jockey Club Spring Meeting programme includes a Maiden Plate, 40 sovs.; St. Andrew's Handicap, 100 sovs. ; President's Handicap, 80 sovs.; Spring Handicap, 50 sovs. ; Hurdle Race, 50 sovs.; Grand Stand Handicap, 40 sovs. For the Autumn Meeting the principal events are : Dunedin Cup, 500 sovs. ; Jockey Club Handicap, 200 sovs. ; Dunedin Derby and Forbury Handicap, 150 sovs. each. SUDDEN DEATH. Mrs. Gibbs, wife of a farmer at the Taieri Beach, died suddenly while out walking yesterday. THE KUMARU. A telegram from an old Dunedin business man, now at Kumaru, says the " diggings are overdone. Gloomy faces. Cash is scarce. Little- gold. Prevent friends from coming."
