Hokitika, Saturday. The Alhambra, which arrived from Melbourne, brings the following items of intelligence :
ASSAULT ON CAPTAIN STANDISH.
Captain Machel, on Wednesday morning, assaulted Captain Standish, the Chief Commissioner of Police, in the breakfast room of the Melbourne Club, with a riding whip, leaving some ugly marks. The affair, which arose over some simple cause, has caused no little sensation in certain quarters.
THE ELECTORAL BILL. The Electoral Bill has been nearly gone through, and the Government haye suct cessfully carried all their propositions. THE WEATHER. Rain is still very much wanted in all the Colonies, and already there has been a •taste of summer hot winds. THEATRICAL ITEMS. The new Italian Opera Company will arrive by next month's mail; — Wilson's Circus remains open three .months longer, and a whole host of amusements are announced.
MELBOURNE CUP. There is no alteration in Clip betting ; Irish Stew and Valentia best favorites, but Newminster considered dahgerousfor both the Derby and Cup. Local is" a good favorite for the Derby. THE DANDENONG FUND. The Dandenong Relief Fund has now reached a large amount, and a considerable . sum has been raised for the men who formed the boats' crew.
