SHANNAHAN 'S SHIFT

•THERE is an oft-quoted phrase 1 which begins with something about "Once a policeman," but however it finishes, it was never meant to apply to members of the police force of the calibre of Tom Shannahan, who now occupies the sub-inspector's chair m the Auckland central police station. The unanimous expression of "Well clone, Tom," from both inside the force and out bears eloquent testimony to the popularity of this officer whose progress along the road of crime detection has been akin to mushroom growth. During his brief occupancy of the senior-sergeant's office m Christchurch, Shannahan proved himself a capable officer under the trying circumstances brought about by a depleted and overworked staff. His dispassionate views and openmindedness might well be employed by many of those higher up the administrative ladder.
