AND IT PAYS
Riding According To Plan (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) Many horsemen could possibly be mentioned who treat their business sreriously by acquainting themselves with every inch of the track over which they ride. TN this connection, E. J. Rae— and •*■ later his son, Bert — have often been referred to as walking over the Great; Northern Steeplechase track and becoming acquainted with the short cuts prior to race days. "N.Z. Truth" discovered another thorough horseman the day before Avondale when requested by Bert Tinker to walk round the new track. From the conversation which ensued on the trip round the course, "Truth's" representative summed it up that Tinker knew his business. He quickly realized that it was a long way home from the turn and that forcing tactics too early might prove detrimental. "A.T." seemed to realize that he had great responsibility on his shoulders by being aboard Aussie, favorite for the All-aged Stakes. On the day he rode Aussie and Awarere according to a plan already mapped out m his mind. He had the satisfaction of knowing that it would not have been his fault if an expectant public were let down. Both won at the right end and the patience of the Te Rapa horseman had much to do with the victories achieved. W7HEN Micrometer missed getting into the money m a hack crowd first day at Avondale the fact that her rider was troubled by a chunk of dirt blinding him may have had something to do with it. As a matter of fact, Alan McCormac's eye was giving him a lot of trouble after the race and he had to receive attention.
