Limerick Gives Field Big Start And Then Succeeds (By Cable. — From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Sydney Representative.) Limerick returns to his homeland on Friday with an unblemished record, his five starts here this autumn yielding five wins.
ON the third day of the meeting he made Gothic look cheap. An easier race for the Limond gelding would have been the Cumberland Stakes, but H. A. Knight, Limerick's owner, told "Truth" that Gothic's owner was looking for a race with Limerick and he had decided to give him a chance to see just how much better was Limerick than Gothic over a mile. The honors rested with the Maorilander. Even half a mile from home he went past Gothic and he always had the race at his mercy after that. Pike brought Gothic along with a good run over the final two furlongs, but McCarten hadn't even to hit the Limond gelding with the whip. And to the thunder of. cheers Limerick again came home m the lead. It was m his last start here that he showed how really great he is. He took the King's Cup at Randwick on Saturday, after conceding almost
an impossible start from the five furlong pole. Though the field was small, Limerick dropped back to last and stayed there until nearing the bend when he moved up on to the heels of the leaders. In the run home McCarten appeared to take things very easily and only m the last stride the gelding poked his head m front and got the decision. McCarten's explanation was that Limerick got his tongue over the bit and he was afraid to move on him. Limerick is booked to leave for Ne\r Zealand on Friday. His vigorous campaign here has done him no harm, but he will be spelled on reaching home. Fred. Jones says his next race will be m the Stakes at Warwick Farm m the spring, a few weeks before the big meeting at Randwick comes on. Limerick has now won over thirty thousand m stakes and bids fair to eclipse Gloaming's Australasian stake-winning record.
